A curious casket: The world on a box about 1600

Science Museum, London

This display is a collaboration between the Science Museum and The Courtauld Gallery. The Illuminating  objects programme sheds light on rarely seen artworks from The Courtauld Gallery. The works are on view at the Science Museum while the Courtauld’s home at Somerset House undergoes major renovation. This allows a series of precious objects to be shown in a new context, highlighting their scientific and technological histories.

Made for an aristocratic patron, this casket illustrates the era’s fascination with collecting curiosities and knowledge from around the world.

The Courtauld Gallery’s painted ivory marriage casket is on display at the Science Museum (on Level 2) until early 2020.
